Colectivo Seres, A.C. (Mexico) provides counselling, support and care to people who have been victims of violations of their human rights through focused programs, strategies, services and actions in favour of LGTBI community, adolescents and young people, men and women to meet the challenges they face in the response to HIV/AIDS and sexual diversity
IntroductionColectivo Seres, A.C is a non-profit community-based organization that was founded in 2007 with the integration of a group of young men and women who were motivated to promote actions in favour of their counterparts related to sexual health, HIV/AIDS prevention, human rights and promotion of socio-cultural activities. Members of Colectivo Seres, A.C. have strong interest in working with adolescents and youth, as well as people who are vulnerable to HIV related to their gender or sexual orientation. Colectivo Seres, A.C works hand in hand with other organizations to promote inclusive public polices to respond in a comprehensive manner in the response to HIV/AIDS in Guanajuato, Mexico. Over the 8 years of their existance, Colectivo Seres, A.C. has managed focused programs, strategies, services and action in favor of LGTBI community, adolescents and young people, men and women to meet the challenges they face in response to HIV/AIDS and sexual diversity. The organization is working continuously with the population of transgender persons affected regarding their human rights in a context that is highly transphobic.

Successes

  • Colectivo Seres A.C promoted the first website for people living with HIV at the state level, with the purpose that key populations have a tool to file cases against violations of human rights, as well as to receive advice and assistance regarding their rights.
  • Colectivo Seres A.C is currently working on its strategy operating the first community center for the comprehensive care of adolescents and young people LGBTI, where this sector can receive services of counseling on sexuality and HIV/AIDS, crisis intervention, sexuality education, formation of new youth leaders that respond to the challenges of HIV and sexual diversity as well as the provision of services to the community, where the beneficiaries can work in their communities to promote healthy habits that decrease the risks of acquiring HIV and other STIs.
  • In the cross-sectoral context, they have promoted the theme of public policy focused on eliminating stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS and sexual diversity.

Red Nacional De Pueblos Originarios en Respuesta Al VIH/Sida (RENPO) (The National Network of Indigenous Communities in the HIV Response)
Red Nacional De Pueblos Originarios en Respuesta Al VIH/Sida (RENPO) (Chile) OR National Network of Indigenous Communities in the HIV Response is the first indigenous organization of Chile in the fight against HIV and is recognized by the authorities of Chile. It provides translations of Spanish to the indigenous languages, peer counseling of indigenous people, and accompanying antiretroviral treatment.
IntroductionRed Nacional De Pueblos Originarios en Respuesta Al Sida (RENPO), a national network of indigenous people working in the HIV response, was founded in 2011. It is a network of 9 indigenous communities (peoples); each has their right to self-determination established according to ILO convention 169. RENPO works with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development, and the National Office of Indigenous Affairs (CONADI) to strengthen HIV prevention and treatment services for indigenous populations, reduce ethnic discrimination, and ensure that these populations participate in the formulation of government policies. RENPO translates key information on HIV from Spanish to indigenous languages, provides peer counseling in local languages and provides support to people on HIV treatment.

Successes

  • Through RENPO, the Ministry of Health is providing HIV prevention services for nine indigenous peoples of Chile, including prevention trainings in the north and south of Chile and on Easter Island.
  • RENPO has contributed to reducing AIDS-related deaths by breaking down cultural barriers between indigenous languages and Spanish. With RENPO’s advocacy, the Ministry of Health has facilitated the entry of indigenous translators in medical consultations, which was key to ensuring adherence to ART and indigenous medicine.
  • RENPO was successful in making the Ministry of Health recognize ancestral indigenous sexual diversity, the vulnerability of the indigenous people affected by HIV, that this population be designated as a key population.
