rcnradio.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nLatin America has come to a halt\nin the response to HIV<\/strong>, which causes AIDS, as the\nimplementation of the pre-exposure antiretroviral prophylaxis (PrEP) is still\nslow in most countries in the region, a worker of the Pan American Health\nOrganization (PAHO)<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMassimo Ghidinelli (Director of\nPAHO\u2019s HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, and Sexually Transmitted Infections Unit)\nclaimed that, despite good news about this disease in Latin America,\nprogress is not being made to improve in this area.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cWe have reached a critical\nstage because, on the one hand, we are in view of elimination, whereas, on the\nother hand, there are gaps which cannot be closed yet,\u201d he said during his\nparticipation in the 10th IAS Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2019), a summit\nthat gathers scientists and specialists in that field from more than 160\ncountries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe specialist indicated that\none of the most outstanding advances in the region is that almost every country\nhas addressed the universal coverage policy. In fact, he said that the region\nhas one of the highest rates of antiretroviral coverage in the world, with an\naverage of 61%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Likewise, he mentioned that,\naccording to the recently published UNAIDS report, mortality rate decreased\nby 20% compared to 2010.<\/strong> Furthermore, countries have made efforts so that\nfinancing to fight this disease is public.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHowever, he regretted that\nnew infections have increased by 7% compared to 2010,<\/strong> and that young people\nare the most vulnerable, as one out of three new cases are in people between 15\nand 24 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHe also said that it has been detected\nthat epidemics in the region are concentrated, as two out of three new\ninfections occur in key populations,<\/strong> mainly in men who have sex with men.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHe mentioned that another relevant\npoint is that, although it is well known that prophylaxis helps avoid new\ninfections, Latin America is not making the most of it. Moreover, late\ndiagnosis still occurs, which compromises people\u2019s lives, since they die within\nthe first six months after being diagnosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn fact, 25% of new cases match\nthat profile,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ghidinelli claimed there is a\nwindow of opportunity in the region, and that we have to improve prevention\ncampaigns and combined prevention. In other words, people should have two or\nmore prevention methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also said we have to expand\nthe response approach in key populations, so that it becomes quicker and more\npeople have access to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He assured some advances, such\nas having solved the dolutegravir controversy (a medicine against HIV that\nwas thought to be responsible for birth defects, but it has been proven safe\nnow), will improve care services for pregnant women.<\/strong>\n\nFinally, he mentioned that people must take advantage of the tools and\ntechnologies available now. \u201cThe challenge will be to realize how to make the\nmost of them,\u201d he added.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The region has one of the highest rates of antiretroviral coverage in the world.
