Co-hosted by the International AIDS Society (IAS) in\ncollaboration with the Stop TB Partnership and the United States Agency for\nInternational Development (USAID), the topic of discussion was- A new era in TB\nprevention: Implications for People living with HIV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium brought together scientific, programmatic and\ncommunity interests from the HIV and TB fields to share knowledge on latent TB\ninfection, opportunities and challenges in HIV-associated TB prevention. \u201cTB is\nthe biggest killer among people living with HIV. We cannot reduce the mortality\namong people living with HIV without addressing TB\u201d, Dr. Suvanand Sahu, Deputy\nExecutive Director, The Stop TB Partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sessions explored research and innovation in TB prevention,\ntreatment options and the policy and implementation approach to decrease the\nburden of TB in HIV programs. The discussions also focused on developments of\nTB vaccines and the implications for high burden HIV settings. &#8220;We need to\nimplement TB preventive therapy with speed+scale to end TB&#8221;, said Dr.\nPatrick Lungu, Head of Zambia&#8217;s National TB Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsymposium emphasized on the action that the HIV and TB communities need to take\njointly to reach global targets.
