{"id":3010,"date":"2016-08-29T20:17:01","date_gmt":"2016-08-30T00:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/plataformalac.org\/en\/?p=3010"},"modified":"2016-08-29T20:17:01","modified_gmt":"2016-08-30T00:17:01","slug":"which-are-the-latin-american-countries-with-more-new-cases-of-hivaids-bbc-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plataformalac.org\/en\/2016\/08\/which-are-the-latin-american-countries-with-more-new-cases-of-hivaids-bbc-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Which are the Latin American countries with more new cases of HIV\/AIDS &#8211; BBC World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Each year, about 2.5 million people are diagnosed with HIV worldwide; in Latin America, Argentina is by far the country with more new cases of infection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This information was revealed by the latest large study on the spread of the virus, the\u00a0<em>Global Burden of Disease<\/em>, conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) of the University of Washington, USA.<\/p>\n<p>The research analyzed the situation in 195 countries between 1980 and 2015 on the occasion of the <strong>21<sup>st<\/sup> International AIDS Conference<\/strong>, held in South Africa from 18 to 22 July.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/pdfs\/journals\/lanhiv\/PIIS2352-3018%2816%2930087-X.pdf\"><strong>Read the full report here (in English)<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The study shows that AIDS epidemic has not been overcome as yet and it that remains <strong>the biggest threat to global health<\/strong> of our time,&#8221; said Peter Piot, founding member of the executive committee of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV\/AIDS (UNAIDS).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lack of protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 986px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/66A6\/production\/_90487262_gettyimages-72692459.jpg\" alt=\"Campa\u00f1a en Honduras en el a\u00f1o 2006.\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image copyright GETTY IMAGES<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;A level of new infections of over two million people each year represents <strong>a collective failure<\/strong> that requires strengthening of prevention policies and vaccine research,&#8221; Piot added.<\/p>\n<p>Much was done in Latin America during the last decade to raise awareness on the use of preservatives to avoid infection.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics reveal that the number of new infections has not changed much in the last decade:<strong>\u00a0the yearly drop has been of 0.7% only between 2005 and 2015 <\/strong>(during the previous decade, this percentage was 2.7).<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, <strong>cases in Argentina increased by 7.8% a year<\/strong> during that period, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The incidence of HIV in Argentina indicates that 14.4 people per 100,000 were infected in 2015,&#8221; the authors of the study said. Infections in that country are growing much faster than in any other country in the region.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The 5 countries in Latin America with more new HIV infections <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Data: 2005-2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h4><strong> Argentina<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>7.8% new cases per year.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h4><strong> Paraguay<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>4.9%<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Bolivia\u00a0<\/strong>4.8%<\/li>\n<li><strong> Colombia\u00a0<\/strong>4.6%<\/li>\n<li><strong> Ecuador\u00a0<\/strong>3.9%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington, USA.<\/p>\n<p>But, why so many new cases?<\/p>\n<p>According to the scientists, the main cause of this increase in Argentina is due to unprotected sex: <strong>9 out of 10 people diagnosed between 2012 and 2014 did not use preservatives<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias\/2015\/12\/151218_salud_condon_aumento_placer_sexual_evitar_vih_mes\"><strong>The super-condom that increases sexual pleasure and prevents HIV infection<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And half of the cases involve <strong>heterosexual couples<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 986px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/B4C6\/production\/_90487264_thinkstockphotos-492938248.jpg\" alt=\"VIH\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image copyright THINKSTOCK\u00a0&#8220;AIDS remains the biggest threat to global health of our time,&#8221; said Peter Piot, from UNAIDS.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After Argentina, the next country with more new HIV cases is Paraguay (4.9%), followed by Bolivia (4.8%), Colombia (4.6%) and Ecuador (3.9%).<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the list, with much more encouraging figures, are Peru (1.7%), Venezuela (0.4%), Uruguay (-0.5%) and Chile (-3.3%).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u201cAn Alarming Picture&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, three-quarters of new infections (1.8 million) took place in sub-Saharan Africa. And from 2005 to 2015, 74 countries reached alarming quotas, particularly Indonesia, the Philippines and some countries of North Africa and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias\/2014\/10\/141003_salud_inicio_pandemia_sida_en_kinshasa_decada_20_kv\"><strong>The &#8220;perfect storm&#8221; in an African city that gave rise to the AIDS epidemic<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite years of good progress and decline of incidence globally, it was not the case across all regions, and <strong>access to antiretroviral therapy<\/strong> (ART) had much to do with it, experts say. However, <strong>the number of deaths did decrease<\/strong>, from 1.8 million in 2005 to 1.2 million in 2015, precisely thanks to that treatment.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 986px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/10F02\/production\/_90487396_hi034143726.jpg\" alt=\"antirretrovirales\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image copyright EPA &#8211; Access to antiretroviral treatment is essential, experts say.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur study shows <strong>an alarming picture<\/strong> of the slow progress in the decline of new HIV infections in the last 10 years,&#8221; said Haidong Wang, lead author of the research.<\/p>\n<p>IHME director, Christopher Murray, spoke of &#8220;stagnation&#8221; in development aid for cases of HIV and AIDS &#8220;in many low-income countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A large scale-up will be needed by governments and international agencies to reach <strong>around US $36,000 million each year to end AIDS by 2030<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Murray said it is important &#8220;to improve screening and treatment programs, and access to antiretroviral drugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, about 2.5 million people are diagnosed with HIV worldwide; in Latin America, Argentina is by far the country with more new cases of infection.
