Because of it, this\nperson was admitted in a hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nFollowing\nthis case, Bahamian authorities set in motion a medical test plan to\ndetect tuberculosis cases in people in shelters inside public\nfacilities of the Bahamas, mainly Haitians, after losing their homes\nwhen hurricane Dorian hit northwestern Bahamas last summer, specially\nthe Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\u201cThe\nnext step in the detection of the disease is a chest x-ray\nexamination,\u201d the government official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nSands\nindicated that the Bahamas have one of the lowest disease rates in\nthe region, but the problem has caught the attention of local\nauthorities as shelters are overcrowded with people who have lost\ntheir homes to hurricane Dorian, most of whom are Haitians illegally\nstaying in the Bahamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n&#8220;We\nhave an aggressive public health protocol for eradicating\ntuberculosis,\u201d highlighted the Minister of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nSands\nsaid that, since the detection of the first tuberculosis case after\nhurricane Dorian, a plan has been implemented, which includes visits\nfrom health staff members to schools and communities to prevent the\nspread of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n&#8220;These\nnearly 80 people who have already been examined now require a\nsecondary examination,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nLittle\nover two weeks ago, the Bahamas Minister of Health informed in a\nstatement that the origin of the infection detected a month ago in a\nperson living in the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium remained unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nDamages\ncaused by hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas are equivalent to 7&nbsp;billion\ndollars, according to preliminary figures provided by Bahamian\nauthorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nDue\nto the destruction it caused, Dorian is considered one of the most\ndevastating storms in Bahamian history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nDamages\nmainly occurred on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama, in\nnorthwestern Bahamas, but other areas of this Atlantic territory\nwere\nvirtually undamaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nOne\nof the hardest hit populations by hurricane Dorian was that of\nHaitian immigrants illegally staying in the Bahamas. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe\ngovernment promoted the deportation of Haitians after the hurricane,\nbut this was criticized by different human rights advocacy groups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: https:\/\/www.elcaribe.com.do\/2019\/12\/30\/cerca-de-un-centenar-de-refugiados-en-bahamas-contagiados-de-tuberculosis\/ San Juan.- A total of 340 people living in shelters in the Bahamas due to the devastation caused by hurricane Dorian were tested, and more than 80 of them were diagnosed with tuberculosis.
